Chennai: A whistleblower activist in Chennai on Sunday exposed the dark underbelly of a bio-medical waste disposal cartel operating in the Chennai city.
The documents in possession with NewsX show that the amount of biomedical waste that is being disposed is much less than the required amount. The documents also say that the hospitals in Chennai are selling waste at Rs 49 per kilo which goes to scrap dealers. This could result in the reuse of infected products like syringes and free delivery of deadly disease.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken a note of it and has urged the state govt to order a CB-CID probe in the matter. The NGT has also asked the Tamil Nadu pollution control board to conduct random checks across the hospitals in Chennai city.
