Puducherry: President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday appointed Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi as the new Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory Puducherry.

A press release from the President’s office said: “The President of India has been pleased to appoint Ms Kiran Bedi, to be the Lt. Governor of Puducherry with effect from the date she assumes charges of her office.”

Kiran Bedi, on her appointment, said, “I look forward to giving every bit of myself to the responsibility. I am there for the benefit of the country. I flow with time. I am here to give my best every day, each day. I am grateful for the government’s decision. They they trusted me.”

The former top cop of the country who joined as the first woman IPS in 1972, served for 35 years before she contested elections as BJP’s CM candidate in New Delhi opposite AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal.

BJP had hoped for a massive victory, given her stature in the country, by winning the middle class vote, but little did they expect that Bedi would go on to lose from Krishna Nagar, a BJP stronghold.

Assembly Elections 2016 were held in Puducherry last week. Out of the 30 seats, Congress won 15 and its ally DMK two.
