SC to hear bail petition of Italian marine

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear the bail petition of Italian marine Sergeant Major Salvatore Girone after the latter had requested for relaxation of his bail plea. The matter will be heard on Thursday.

Earlier this month, the UN's Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague had recommended relaxation of bail conditions of the Italian marine.

Italy had also accepted that if Girone is allowed to return to Italy, he will continue to remain under the jurisdiction of the courts of India.

Two Italian marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, operating as part of a Vessel Protection Detachment (VPD), were detained in India in February 2012 after they opened fire in the direction of an Indian fishing trawler, resulting in the death of two Indian fishermen off the coast of Kerala.

Latorre is back in Italy after a stroke in 2014 while Girone is staying at the Italian embassy in New Delhi.
