New Delhi: Following Delhi's example of ban on diesel cars, a special circuit bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) at Ernakulam on Monday banned the usage of diesel vehicles older than 10 years in the state of Kerala.
After hearing a petition filed by Lawyer's Environmental Awareness Forum (LEAF), the bench headed by Justice J Swatanterkumar issued the interim order. The tribunal has also ordered that a fine of Rs 10,000 be imposed on diesel vehicles if it continues running 30 days after the imposition of the ban.
In the petition, it is alleged that Kochi has earned the reputation for being one of the most polluted cities in India.
The petition had demanded that spewing of venomous gases by the old diesel vehicles such as lorries and buses should be immediately curtailed.
