New Delhi: In retaliation to the midnight murder of the Congolese student studying in New Delhi, few Indian shops in Congo and some Indians studying in the region were attacked on Thursday.

Earlier this month, a Congolese student who was studying in New Delhi was brutally beaten up by goons in Vasant Kunj area of New Delhi, following which, the student succumbed to his injuries. The scuffle had issued after the Congolese student hailed an auto-rickshaw but was intercepted by three men who forcefully boarded the vehicle.

The MEA said that the Indian Embassy in Congo was in touch with the local authorities and things have presently calmed.

“Thousands of African students continue to benefit from the Indian education system and we will ensure full safety to them,” stated the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that some Indian nationals in Congo were injured and some shops were vandalised in retaliation to the attack on the African student.

Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs, had assured the African students on Wednesday that stringent actions will be taken against the culprits.

“I would like to assure African students in India that this is an unfortunate and painful incident involving local goons,” tweeted the minister.
