New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan’s official car has now been updated to a Luxury sedan costing Rs 48.25 lakh.
The Lok Sabha’s Secretariat cited security reasons for the upgradation of her official vehicle from Toyota Camry to a Jaguar XE which was later delivered to the speaker’s official residence in Delhi on Monday May 23.
“Sanction of Competent Authority to incur an advance of Rs 48,25,661 for purchase of new car for the use of Honble Speaker, Lok Sabha from AMP Motors Pvt Ltd. Necessary settlement will be made in due course after receiving the original invoice for the purchase of new car,” said a note from the Secretariat’s office.
“There were two options which were given to the speaker — BMW and Jaguar, suggested on the basis of their security manoeuvrability. We have opted for the cheapest option.” said D K Bhalla, Secretary, Lok Sabha Secretariat.
According to protocol norms, the Speaker is at par with the Chief Justice of India and sixth after President, Vice President, Prime Minister, governors, and both former presidents and Deputy Prime Minister.
To this extravagant expenditure the Congress leader Manish Tewari said “Sumitra Mahajan ji ke acche din aa gaye.” He further questioned if it was prudent for her to make such an investment.”
