New Delhi: Leonardo-Finmeccanica, the company which owns AgustaWestland as a wholly owned subsidiary, issued a press release on Wednesday which claimed that the company undertook an ‘internal restructuring’ and was interested in finding a transparent solution to the impasse which the AgustaWestland scandal had created.
Reacting to the initiation of the blacklisting process of companies by the Indian government, Finmeccanica acknowledged the statements made by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on the AgustaWestland scam and said that the company had not received any official communication from government authorities.
“. . . The contract for torpedoes was never formally signed and therefore never included in Leonardo-Finmeccanica’s backlog,” the press release said.
Resonating Parrikar’s claim that Finmeccanica’s service was still employed pertaining to the supply of essential components, the company said that “despite the context of uncertainty”, a light is shed on current initiatives being taken by the government and future business opportunities.
However, the company claimed that if the government does not take an initiative for a solution, the company will not refrain from assessing the situation given the limited size of its ongoing business in India.
Claiming that the company had gone under an internal restructuring and introduced a detailed anti-corruption code and whistleblowing measures, the press release said, “It is not by chance that Leonardo-Finmeccanica has reached the top of the international ranking of defence companies committed to anti-corruption, as highlighted in the Anti-Corruption Index 2015 produced by Transparency International, which sees the company moving to the more qualified band B which includes leading international operators in the sector, but not some important suppliers to the Indian Ministry of Defence.”
The AgustaWestland scam exploded in India in 2013 when an Italian court revealed that several Indian officials had been bribed by the helicopter manufacturer to secure the purchase of its choppers over other counterparts.
