Rahul Gandhi debuts on Twitter, ‘Office of RG’ posts his schedule. Will it really help Congress?

NEW DELHI: Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday acknowledged and confirmed his presence on Twitter after making a debut with his Twitter handle ‘Office of RG’ yesterday.

The first tweet on the page on Thursday said, “Watch this space for information and updates on Rahul Gandhi’s official programs and upcoming events.”

Soon after that, the first announcement of Rahul Gandhi’s schedule was made which informed of the Congress leader commencing his 15km padyatra on May 12 in Adilabad district of Telangana.

While there were strong speculations over the authenticity of the account, a source close to the team informed that they were initially monitoring the responses from the Twitter community before going forward with its posts.

The official account of the Gandhi scion which has more than 23 thousand followers so far will keep the twitterazzis informed about the ongoing campaigns, public speeches and statements to the media.

44-year-old Rahul has been away from the social media platforms so far which has often been seen a big gap in his campaigns in India that has millions of followers.

As of now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi leads with 12 million followers, whereas Aam Aadmi Party Chief Arvind Kejriwal leads with 4.3 million followers on Twitter. Several social media campaigns were an active part of their election to power.

Ever since Rahul has returned from his recent sabbatical of 57 days, the Congress VP has actively taken up issues that included net neutrality, Land Bill and others. However, a large section of his party believed that his absence on social media was not helping the actual cause.

Well, with his first initiative to be actively ‘involved’ with his followers, it would be interesting to see how his leadership is impacted with the same.
