Shyam Benegal to NewsX on 'Udta Punjab': I support freedom of creative expression , Udta Punjab, Shyam Benegal

New Delhi: After almost the entire film industry came out in support of their fight against Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani, Shyam Benegal while speaking exclusively to NewsX said," The movie pertains to drug dealings and incidentally, Punjab happens to be the most vulnerable state"
"The problem must be dealt with seriously and it is a known fact that most of the drug dealings in the country happen from Punjab, as it the border state", he added.
On responding to the question of state's projection in a negative light, Benegal said," I don't believe that it is showing the state in a bad light instead; it shows that the state is vulnerable which has been noticebly pointed in the film.
"At this point, we are with the government and only after we submit our report, we will be able to come out with further details", asserted Benegal.
The revising committee of the CBFC had earlier suggested several cuts in the film, and suggested that 'Punjab' be dropped from the name. The co-producers of the film, Phantom and Balaji Motion Pictures, are still aiming to release the film at its original date, 17 June. The producers have approached the Bombay High Court.
