Karnataka RS polls will go as scheduled

New Delhi: After recommending a detailed Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the bribery allegations that surfaced in the ‘sting videos’; the Election Commission on Thursday said the elections will go on as per the schedule.
The EC has also asked for an FIR against JD(S) MLA Mallikarjun Khuba, according to the reports.
‘’The Commission has decided not to defer the poll scheduled to be held on the 11th June, 2016, nor to make any recommendation to the President for rescinding the electoral process for the biennial election under reference,’’ said the order by the EC released late Thursday.
This comes as a big relief for both; the incumbent Congress and the BJP which had requested the elections to be conducted, as scheduled. Janata Dal (Secular) i.e. JD(S) had however demanded it to be cancelled.
What was the issue?
A sting video telecast by news channels had shown some legislators allegedly willing to exchange their votes for cash.
Elections are going to be held in four Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka and the five main contenders in fray are Union commerce minister Nirmala Sitharaman and senior Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh including Oscar Fernandes.
