New Delhi: Lt Colonel Shrikant Purohit who was prosecuted for the 2008 Malegaon blast case was a victim of the manipulation of terrorism, cries one former RAW officer.
In a never before disclosed paper, the established differences in the FIR suggests that the Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) under the then Maharashtra Congress government could have mislead the Army by suppressing the FIR filed in the Malegaon case.
Under the ATS version of the filed FIR, the charges against Col Purohit were Sec 302 (Murder), Sec 307 (Attempt to murder), Sec 326 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and Sec 324 (Causing hurt by weapons).
But in the Army version, the applicant was handed over to the ATS under Sec 465 (Punishment for forgery), Sec 368 (Wrongfully concealing fact) Sec 471 (using forged document) and Sec 420 (Cheating and dishonesty).
It is unclear why the Army, till now, concealed the information from the government. If this information is correct, it could reveal an effort by the then government at shifting the focus towards a Hindu-terror sham.
The Malegaon bombings where 37 people lost their lives was initially blamed on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). After a chargesheet was filed in 2013, the blame was shifted towards a Hindu extremist group Abhinav Bharat.
