New Delhi: After the fact-finding committee sent by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) allegedly revealed that there had indeed been a mass Hindu exodus in the village of Kairana in Shamli, UP, BJP MP Sangeet Som then led a mass rally which abruptly ended with him giving a 15-day ultimatum to the Samajwadi Party (SP) to bring the displaced families back to Kairana.
The BJP also said that they will ask for a CBI probe into the matter so that a definite consensus is reached where it is confirmed that there indeed was a mass migration of Hindu families from the region.
The Samajwadi Party, however, was quick to retaliate and invoked the 2002 Gujarat riots to remind the BJP of the severe disparity it had caused in the state. The SP said that the BJP needs to stop worrying about bringing back families to Kairana and instead should focus on bringing back families who had fled Gujarat during the 2002 riots.
Before the hotly-contested Uttar Pradesh elections where BJP is looking to topple the Akhilesh Yadav government, opposition parties are saying that BJP’s claims of Hindu exodus are just farcical.
The District Magistrate of Shamli had yesterday said that 3 families had shifted from the village because of rising crimes, and 67 other had gradually shifted over a period of 10 years.
The Kairana issue came into national spotlight when the BJP MP Hukum Singh disclosed the name of more than 300 families who had moved out of the region.
