New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday announced that it will effectively close down 500 TASMAC (Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation) shops that sell alcoholic beverage in the state.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had announced before winning the election that she will bring about a phased prohibition in the state and will close down 500 shops across the state.

This is one of the largest clamping-down by the government on liquor shops till date.

TASMAC managing director identified the shops across the regions that were to be closed with the assistance of the district collectors and senior regional managers and district managers respectively.
