Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) on Tuesday inducted gangster-turned-politicians, Mukhtar Ansari and his brother Afzal Ansari in the party. This is seen as an attempt by the ruling Samajwadi Party to gather some muscle power in the state.
This would also help SP to get a tighter hold on the Muslim vote bank of the state before the 2017 Assembly elections. In a broader sense, this is the first coalition of the state. SP has now officially allied with Mukhtar Ansari’s party Quami Ekta Dal.
The coalition of the two parties would definitely help them building a stronger base in eastern UP especially in Ghazipur, Mau Varanasi and Ballia. Though some tussle can arise on the distribution of tickets between the two parties.
Mukhtar Ansari, an MLA from the Mau constituency, is a close associate of Bihar MP from Siwan, Shahabuddin. Bihar police has kept a close eye on Mukhtar in connection with the killing of Bihar journalist Rajdeo Ranjan.
Mukhtar Ansari is the key accused in the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Krishnanand Rai in 2005. He is currently in Bareilly jail for the same crime though he has pleaded not guilty.
SP is expected to benefit from this coalition but this has also raised serious questions on Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s promises of improving the law and order situation.
