New Delhi: Following the torrential rains and cloudburst in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh and Chamoli districts, two teams of a total of 130 men of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were rushed to the affected areas. NDRF teams have also been rushed to the state.
As per current reports, there is a massive traffic jam on NH 58 connecting Rishikesh-Badrinath after the cloudburst.
Of the total 130 men, 50 ITBP personnel were sent from Pithoragarh towards the flood-hit areas while 80 ITBP personnel were sent from Mirthi.
The rescue and relief teams include doctors and mountaineers. Rescue operations were immediately begun, the worst-hit being the Bastadi village of Pithoragarh.
The rescue teams had to reach the rain-hit areas on foot as roads remained blocked for vehicles to ply on and it was difficult to land choppers in the affected areas due to low visibility.
All means of communication have been badly affected with major rivers flowing above the danger level mark. Most of the roads have been blocked due to landslides.
As per the ITBP PRO, 5 bodies were recovered and 5 people who were injured were taken to the hospital.
