Kerala government proposes to introduce monthly pension to transgenders

New Delhi: Kerala government on its budget for 2016-17 reportedly proposed to introduce monthly pension to transgenders who have attained 60 years of age.

Making the proposal in the budget presented in the assembly, state finance minister TM Thomas Isaac said the budget wishes to express solidarity with the people in the third gender group.

The budget proposed to increase all welfare pensions to Rs 1,000. It also proposed to set up a separate department to coordinate government schemes for the welfare of women.

Isaac said the government would extend financial assistance to NGOs that work among the transgender community.

The budget also proposed to set apart Rs 200 crores for 'kudumbashree', the women self-help group set up under poverty eradication programme.

The minister added that CPI(M)-led LDF government would provide financial assistance to transgender students.
