Durban: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday visited Phoenix Settlement, a place known to be closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi who had established it in 1904.
PM Modi recieved an enthusiastic welcome by the locals there who were singing and dancing.

The settlement is devoted to Gandhi’s principles of Satyagraha which has played an important spiritual and political role throughout its long history, promoting justice, peace and equality.

Later in the day, Prime Minister will also attend a reception in his honour to be hosted by the Mayor of Durban and the Indian High Commissioner to South Africa before leaving for Tanzania in the evening.
Earlier, PM Modi experienced the 1893 train journey of Mahatma Gandhi between Pentrich and Pietermaritzburg stations.
PM Modi said that his visit South Africa is like a pilgrimage as he is getting to visit places that are significant to Indian history and Mahatma Gandhi's life.
