2002 Godhra train attack: Key accused Imran Batuk nabbed from Malegaon

New Delhi: Ahmedabad crime branch on Wednesday arrested Imran Batuk, the main accused in the 2002 Godhra carnage, from Malegaon in Maharashtra. The accused was nabbed in a joint operation executed by ATS and Ahmedabad crime Branch.

The Godhra train burning incident on February 27, 2002 left 59 people dead, most of who were Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists who were returning from Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh after a religious ceremony at the disputed Babri Masjid site. Coach S-6 of Sabarmati Express was set on fire killing the kar sevaks.

Following the incident, there was widespread violence in the state in which over 1,000 people were killed.
