Mumbai: Election Commission on Wednesday cancelled All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen’s (AIMIM) Maharashtra registration as a state political party for not filing its income tax and fund details. This comes as a major setback for party chief Asaduddin Owaisi.
As a result of which, Owaisi’s party is now barred from contesting the Maharashtra civic polls; however, party members can contest elections independently.
Though, the party was earlier issued notices by EC asking it to submit reports failing which its registration would be cancelled.
The AIMIM was initially a city-based party with influence only in the parts of Old Hyderabad, but the party won two seats in the 2014 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election and emerged as the second largest party in the Aurangabad municipal elections.
