Two women commit suicide in one day at IIT Madras campus

Chennai: In a shocking incident, two women committed suicide inside the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) campus in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

P Maheswari, a 34-year-old research scholar allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room while 47-year-old G Vijayalakshmi, wife of an assistant professor (Physics), ended her life at her family's quarters in the IIT-Madras campus.

Kotturpuram police registered a case of suspicious death under section 174 of CrPC.

According to police sources, both the suicides are related to ‘family issues’.

In a statement, IIT-M shared its condolence over the death of post-doctoral research scholar in the campus.

"IIT Madras reports with deep sadness the death of a post-doctoral research scholar in the campus. The scholar's family has been informed. The institute extends its deep felt condolences to the family and the near and dear ones of the scholar for the unfortunate, untimely and devastating loss."

The dead bodies were shifted to the Government Royapettah Hospital for autopsy.
