Uttar Pradesh: After consuming fake liquor, 17 locals from Etah in Uttar Pradesh developed excruciating pain and died later under different circumstances, police said on Sunday.

Five government employees were suspended following the news; three were from the Excise department. The locals had innocuously bought liquor from a shop where fake liquors were being stored and sold.

The deceased: Netrapal, Ramesh Shakya, Sarvesh, Ateeq and Ram Autar were from Luhari Darwaja and Laukhera village.

District Magistrate Ajay Yadav said that five other people: Sharan Singh, Sobaran Singh, Chini died at a hospital while one, Vipin, died at the Agra Medical College.

Locals alleged that some of the individuals who had consumed the liquor were rendered blind after drinking. Some enraged locals blocked the Etah-Farukhhabad highway.

Fake liquor is rampant in Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's state where vendors sell poorly chemicalised mixtures as alcohol.
