New Delhi: After Navjot Singh Sidhu, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and nominated Rajya Sabha MP, today resigned from the seat of Rajya Sabha, his wife Navjot, a lawmaker in Punjab and a parliamentary secretary in the Akali Dal-BJP government, also resigned from her post. Navjot Kaur had announced her resignation on social media earlier this year but later she changed her mind.
With AAP contesting for Punjab, Navjot Singh Sidhu and wife Navjot Kaur has officially joined hands with the Aam Aadmi Party which is in power in the National Capital. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has been trying to woo the people of Punjab through his many perks announced on advertisements.
The resignation came as a big surprise to the Bharatiya Janata Party which shares power with the Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab.
Sidhu, in a statement, indicated his discontent with the BJP, of which he was thrice an elected member of the Lok Sabha and currently a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, saying: “In the war of right or wrong, you can’t afford to be neutral.”
Soon after resigning from the Upper House, Sidhu hit out at the BJP, saying the party despite nominating him to the Rajya Sabha had closed his doors in Punjab.
“I had accepted the Rajya Sabha nomination for welfare of Punjab. With closure of every window leading to Punjab, the purpose stands defeated, now a mere burden. I prefer not to carry it,” he said.
“In the war of right or wrong, you can’t afford to be neutral rather than being self-centred. Punjab’s interest is paramount,” he added.
Navjot Singh Sidhu was Member of Parliament from Amritsar from 2004 to 2014. The former Indian cricketer was asked to step down in order to pave the way for Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to fight from his constituency during the 2014 General Elections.
