New Delhi: A 27-year-old car thief, who specialised in stealing high-end cars, reportedly to impress his girl friends and was inspired by Bollywood character “Bunty Chor”, was arrested here, police said on Thursday. Two stolen vehicles were also recovered from him.
“Robin aka Rahul was arrested when he drove the stolen BMW vehicle in west Delhi’s Paschim Vihar area near a five star hotel to sell it,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Pushependra Kumar said in a statement.
Police also recovered two high-end stolen cars — one BMW and a Toyota Fortuner — from his possession.
According to the police, the accused was inspired from Bollywood movie “Oye Lucky Lucky Oye” character of “Bunty Chor” by imitating his modus operandi. He also had the photo of the actor in his pocket.
Police also said he stole vehicles to impress his girl friends. He lived a lavish life and was often spotted at pubs and eatries in the national capital.
The officer further said that Robin, was arrested by the Crime Branch in January this year, had come out on bail in May.
Explaining the modus operandi of the accused, police said: “Robin targetted high-end cars i.e. Audi, BMW, Fortuner, Mercedes, Skoda in posh colonies when the house owners went for morning walk.”
“He entered in the homes during early morning hours confidently and stole the keys of the car. And then he took away the car,” the officer added.
Apart from Delhi, he was operating in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab too, police said.
Robin was arrested on Wednesday evening, after the CCTV footage of him driving away a BMW car along with a stolen Audi went viral on the social media.
On June 15, Robin along with his associate drove into a posh locality in Noida’s Sector 17 in broad daylight and got away unnoticed after stealing a luxury BMW. Though there were people and security guards all around them, but no one noticed the two theives.
