New Delhi: In another shocker being reported from Uttar Pradesh a Dalit man was found dead under suspicious circumstances in police custody on Thursday in Kanpur.

The victim was identified as Kamal Valmiki, 26. Family of the deceased have alleged that he died due to police brutality. Following the incident, a murder case was registered against five police officials, and 12 others were suspended including the station incharge.

The victim, Valmiki had been brought in for interrogation 2 days ago in a case of burglary, along with another man, Raju Mistri.

As the news of Valmiki’s death at the Ahirwan police station spread, it resulted in violent protests in Chakeri area of Kanpur where protestors blocked National Highway 2, causing traffic congestion on the route due to which the police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and restore traffic movement.

Disclosing the matter Valmiki’s sister Rekha said, “He was subjected to third degree torture resulting in his death.”

Shalabh Mathur, senior superintendent of police (SSP) said they were investigating the entire matter, and were looking for Raju as well who was reportedly missing.
