New Delhi: At least 25 blackbucks died after reportedly consuming pesticide-laced crop in Mahbubnagar, Telangana on Saturday.
According to forest officials, some farmers had placed the pesticide granules along their maize fields on Friday to kill the rodents and boars which were destroying their crop.
The blackbucks from the nearby forest came to fields to feed on the grass and accidentally consumed the pesticide granules.
The farmers alerted the police on Saturday morning after they saw bodies of blackbucks lying in the fields.
District police chief Rema Rajeswari told NDTV that cases have been filed under the Wildlife Protection Act against farmers who allegedly used pesticides on maize crop despite warnings by forest officials not to use it, considering a big black buck population in the area.
