Chennai: A train carrying 228 boxes of old currency notes meant to be transferred to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was robbed on Monday night. The train was going from Salem to Chennai when the money was robbed.
The robbers seem to have entered the coach after cutting through the roof sometime during Monday night or early on Tuesday when the train reached Virudhachalam.
According to the police, approximately Rs 340 crore was being transported in 220 cartons kept in two compartments of the train.
When the train arrived at Egmore station on Monday, it was discovered that two boxes were tampered with, police said. They suspect that few lakhs of rupees could have been burgled.

A probe has been ordered into the matter and according to preliminary investigation, the robbery might have been carried out by a huge gang.
