New Delhi: Taking place in Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit man and his 13-year-old girl were allegedly beaten up for drawing water from a hand pump inside the premises of an ashram in Sambhal district.

The hand pump was located near the Dunda Ashram in Gunnaur area where the 13-year-old daughter of the Dalit man had gone for drinking water after working in the fields. When people saw her drinking the water, they started beating her up.

Even when the father intervened and pleaded the attackers to stop beating his daughter, the gathered men, accompanied by the temple priest, ganged up on him.

The father and the daughter were later rushed to the hospital. Police later arrested two men involved in the attack.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had entreated the people to cease attacks on the Dalit community.
