New Delhi: The much-awaited Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill 2016 has been passed in Rajya Sabha.

However, there is no mention of the “surrogate mother” in the amended bill. Members of Parliament (MPs) of various opposition parties have questioned the government regarding as to why there is no clarity on what benefits would be extended to the surrogate mother.

The MPs have raised the objection that when the amended bill talks about the benefits provided to the commissioning mother (one whose egg surrogate mother carries), then why does it have no mention of the benefits provided to the surrogate mother.

The bill will now be discussed in the Lok Sabha.
