New Delhi: The Congress party workers of Odisha on Tuesday took to streets to protest over Mahanadi river issue. The agitating members called for a state wide band and demanded stoppage of construction of a barrage on the river.
They blocked the roads by burning tyres and also resorted to rail roko at many stations across the state. Police confronted the protesters and detained them.
Dispute over Mahanadi has been a long-standing bone of contention between neighbour states Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
In recent times, chief ministers of both states are engaged in a war of words over the river which was infamous as the "sorrow of Odisha".
Opposition parties of Odisha have also urged President Pranab Mukherjee to direct Chhattisgarh Government to stop constriction of projects on the upstream of the river till the inter-state water disputes are resolved.
