Srinagar: While unfurling the Tricolor, a proud CRPF commandant Pramod Kumar would have not thought in the wildest of his dreams that destiny had harsh plans for him on Independence Day.

Kumar was killed in an encounter with terrorists in Nowhatta, Srinagar, two hours before an Independence Day parade in the area. Earlier in the day, he had participated in a flag-hoisting ceremony and gave a soul-stirring speech vowing to fight India’s foes.

Only an hour later, terrorists opened fire at security forces. Pramod Kumar, Commanding Officer of the 49 battalion, died after sustaining a bullet injury to his head.  Eight CRPF personnel and a police constable were injured in the attack. He is survived by his wife Neha Tripathi, daughter Aarna and 63-year-old father.
