New Delhi: In light of the recent rape case emerging from one of India's most prominent universities, the Jawaharlal Nehru University, JNU on Monday released an official statement on the case and said that it was "completely shocked" by the incident.
A 1st year PhD student on Sunday had filed a report with Vasant Kunj Police Station in Delhi accusing a fellow student of raping her. The accused was later identified as Anmol Ratan who had called the victim to his hostel room and had laced her drink before raping her. The victim in her complaint had said that Anmol picked her from her hostel to give her the film and took her to Brahamputra hostel where he offered drinks to her and after that raped her.
The victim also alleged that Anmol didn’t allow her to go and threatened her of extreme consequences.
Issuing its official statement on the case, the university wrote, "Jawaharlal Nehru University always stands for dignity of the individual, respect for women and democratic values. It is in this light that the JNU Administration strongly condemns an incident of heinous rape in a hostel in the campus on 20 August 2016. This has completely shaken the JNU Community and has tarnished the image of the university. The Administration does not tolerate such incidences and resolves to take appropriate measures to prevent them in future. The entire JNU Community stands with the victim. Moreover, the Administration appeals to students, staff and teachers to remain vigilant against such incidences."
