New Delhi: A convict in the infamous 2012 gangrape of a medical student in New Delhi, Vinay Sharma, allegedly tried to commit suicide in Tihar jail on Thursday, according to ANI.

Vinay Sharma was one from the five accused of rape and murder of Nirbhaya which horrified the entire nation, bringing the government to its knees to introduce immediate reforms for women safety in the country.

Sharma tried to commit suicide by using towel to hang himself. But after authorities discovered his attempt, they quickly took him to the hospital.

Vinay Sharma, pronounced guilty in the Nirbhaya gangrape, had last year requested additional security for himself in Tihar jail as he claimed that he was being repeatedly assaulted by inmates and police officials.

Dr AK Mehta, Medical Superintendent of Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital, said, "Condition is stable. Vitals are normal. He is out of danger. He was brought in with ingestion of some unknown substance and strangulation. We have sent gastric lavage for further examination. We will keep him under observation for at least 24 hours."
