Mumbai: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on Monday protested against the meat ban during Paryushan - a Jain festival - and said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cannot go ahead with such a ban or decide what people eat.
Earlier, advocating the meat ban in Mumbai during Paryushan, BJP leader Raj Purohit demanded that the existing two-day ban on slaughter of animals and sale of meat in the city should be extended to four days.
Not only the opposition but the Shiv Sena also opposed the meat ban isolating the BJP in the case.
This entire issue had also come up last year when an eight day ban was demanded which only sustained for two days. Despite that the BJP MLA has proposed a four-day ban on meat and another four-day ban during the Ganesh Chaturthi.
Criticising the BJP-led government, Congress leader Manish Tewari said, "Frankly it is ridiculous, all this is digression in order to divert attention from total and abysmal government failure which characterises the performance of this government."
