A Muslim cop on Tuesday approached Kerala High Court for permission to grow beard.

Kochi: A Muslim police officer on Tuesday approached Kerala High Court challenging the state police chief’s refusal to grow a beard as per his religious faith.

Riyaz K, in his petition submitted that he wanted to keep a permanent beard as it is a religious obligation but his request was denied by the Kerala director general of police.

Challenging the DGP, Riyaz approached the high court on Monday. The court issued notice to the state govt and the state police.

Riyaz said the Sikhs officers in police and military services were not banned from growing beard and hair and it was unfair not to give the same privilege to Muslims.
