New Delhi: In more trouble for the former liquor baron Vijay Mallya, a Mumbai court has issued a non-bailable warrant against him in Rs 1000 crore service tax evasion matter. The chief metropolitan magistrate court in Mumbai issued a non-bailable warrant against Vijay Mallya and the chief executive of Kingfisher airlines Sanjay Agarwal on Saturday.
Vijay Mallya was asked to appear before the Court on Saturday but he failed, following which the court has issued a non-bailable warrant against Mallya.
The court had summoned Mallya thrice before issuing the warrant.
"Mallya was to have been present today but his lawyer Mr Desai said he doesn't have the travel documents and sought concessional mercy for Mallya. Also, Sanjay Agarwal who is in Miami claimed to have his tickets and boarding pass attached to his application but was unfit to fly. We checked his medical records to find he only had a cough and appraised the court on the matter."
The tax department had approached the court to recover the dues of around Rs 1000 crore including interests. A senior official said that the airline had not deposited the service tax with the department and diverted the money for other purposes.
