New Delhi: After the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered for testing of drinking water samples in six western districts of Uttar Pradesh, pollution control authorities and administration in UP, instead of carrying out the test, has started to relentlessly blame each other.
In villages of Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, Baghpat, Ghaziabad and Saharanpur, the green panel has ordered the inspection of drinking water samples. The state pollution control board has also been told to perform the inspection of drinking water.
After the order was issued, the real conundrum came when the district magistrate of Muzaffarnagar wrote in an affidavit that drinking water of hand pumps contain toxic metals and analysis was not possible due to the high cost of running the tests. The DM then said that the test could be done in the laboratory of Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board.
But when the question was put forward to the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, it said that the testing of water of hand pumps or tubewells is done by UP Jal Niggam and UPPCB.
The matter on this contentious issue will be heard on September 7.
