Lucknow: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi was in Deoria, a town in eastern Uttar Pradesh, to meet farmers and address them through 'khaat sabha' (khaat is a wooden cot). Even before the rally was over the cameras witnessed something bizarre - people were seen walking with the brand new cots which the party had laid out.
There were around 2500 cots that were laid out by the largest party of the country. Cost of a wooden cot is around Rs 750 to Rs 800.
The mayhem began with the raiding of a tent that had eatables and mineral water bottles and soon when nothing was left in the tent people started leaving with the wooden cots.
There were certain cots that were made of iron were left behind. Supposedly they were too heavy to carry.
The khaat sabha is an innovative take on village meetings where elders deliberate on important matters seated on cots fashioned out of rope and wood.
Rahul Gandhi began his 2,500-km journey from Deoria in eastern UP. Rahul Gandhi aims at covering 223 out of 404 assembly constituencies before the assembly elections in the state due next year. Rahul Gandhi will be stopping at many villages and also take part in a number of road shows.
