First Sikh Guru Nanak Dev ji's 529th marriage anniversary is being celebrated across the country with great enthusiasm

New Delhi: First Sikh Guru Nanak Dev ji's 529th marriage anniversary is being celebrated across the country with great enthusiasm on Thursday.

Guru Nanak Dev ji had married Mata Sulakhni in 1487. One interesting fact about the marriage is that Guru Nanak Dev ji had only taken four ‘pheras’ around the fire  instead of prescribed seven as he refused to follow the marriage rituals dictated by the Brahmins of that era.

The anniversary is popularly known as 'Babe Da Viah', and is a grand affair not just in the state of Punjab, but throughout the country.

Incorrect information in the article

Hi, I would like to point out a crucial mistake in this article which as stated by the author of this article "One interesting fact about the marriage is that Guru Nanak Dev ji had only taken four ‘pheras’ around the fire instead of prescribed seven". The incorrect information is that Guru Nanak Dev ji did not take 'phere' around the FIRE but he took those phere around the 'Shabad', specifically the mool mantar sahib ji.. The reference to this information can be found in Janam Sakhi Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Hope to see this corrected in the article..
