Kanpur: In a shocking incident, a couple in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh sold off their five-month-old son for Rs 1.6 lakh to clear their rising debts.
Khalid (40) and Saeeda (35), who run a tea stall in Kanpur, sold off their son to a carpet trader. The incident came into light when the couple and the buyer were arrested by the police on Tuesday.
The couple had taken a loan of Rs 50,000 and was being continuously pressurised for not clearing the loan. So, they sold Faizan, the youngest of their four children to a carpet trader Haroon for Rs 1.6 lakh on July 20.
However, to evade queries about the disappearance of Faizan, the couple went to the Babupurwa police station and lodged a ‘missing’ complaint on July 22.
The couple told police that their son went missing while he was playing outside their house.
An FIR was lodged and the police started probing into the matter. After investigation, the police later came to know that the couple had sold off their son.
Saeeda told police that they were in immediate need of money and that’s why they took this extreme step.
Police has registered a case against the couple and the carpet trader and further investigation is underway.
