Majuli gets district status

Guwahati: World's largest river island Majuli on Thursday was declared as the first river island district of India.
On September 7, All India Radio News took to their Twitter handle to tweet the following pictures of the island with the caption: "Photos of Majuli, which will be announced as 1st island district of country on September 8th by Assam govt."
Chief Minister of Assam Sarbanand Sonowal, who is the elected MLA from Majuli constituency promised to declare the island as district on the first cabinet meeting on May 24. 
Majuli, the cultural capital of the state has been struggling for a long time due to soil erosion. Almost 60% of its land has been washed away by the Brahmaputra. Majuli will become the 35th district of Assam with 1 lakh 54 thousand people living in it. 
On September 1, Majuli was declared as the largest river island by Guinness World Records by displacing Marajo island of Brazil.
