New Delhi: In a startling revelation, reports claim that the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust had received donations to the tune of Rs 50 lakh from Zakir Naik's Islamic research foundation in 2011. The donations were refunded by the trust after reported terror links of Zakir Naik's research centre were established.
Zakir Naik, the Islamic preacher first featured in the nexus after it was revealed that an attacker, Nibras Islam, 22-year-old in the Dhaka Terror attack, used to follow Zakir Naik.
Naik, a controversial preacher from India, is banned in the UK, Canada and Malaysia. He was widely popular in Bangladesh through his Peace TV, although his preaching often demean other religions including other Muslim sects. Some also claim he incites vilence and funds terrorist activities.
On July 7, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a probe into the speeches, writings and other materials of Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, president of Islamic Research Foundation.
After a probe was ordered in the issue there were many who supported Zakir Naik and called him innocent and not a supporter of terrorism. Since the entire controversy has started Zakir Naik has been skipping his visits to India.
