New Delhi: Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in a public meeting at Singur on Monday announced that she will hand over 800 cheques among farmers there. This is her first public meeting in the region after the Supreme Court’s verdict quashing the acquisition of land in the area by the erstwhile Left Front government.

The cheques will be distributed during the public meeting scheduled on September 14.

Days ago, the state government said that in the process of returning land taken from peasants of Singur for the Tata Motors Nano project it has so far made about 100 acres cultivable. It has also completed the demarcation of plots in 325 acres.

The Bengal CM also said that the physical possession of cultivable land would be given to the land owners within the stipulated time frame of 12 weeks.
