Cleric says, triple talaq is nothing but gross injustice to women

New Delhi: Dubbing it as a totally wrong law, a Shia cleric on Friday said that triple talaq is gross injustice to women.

“Triple talaq is nothing but gross injustice to women, this is a totally wrong law,” said Maulana Saif Abbas a Shia cleric.

The statement came two weeks after the All-India Shia Personal Law Board presented a modern format of the ‘nikahnama’. The new-look ‘nikahnama’ draft empowers women with equal rights within the Indian Constitution's framework.

“For us triple talaq is against both reasoning and justice; would request Sunni brothers to reconsider this law,” said Kalbe Sadiq another Shia cleric.

The issue of triple talaq is pending adjudication before the Supreme Court. The court earlier this month gave the Centre four weeks' time to file its response on the right of Muslim women in matrimonial matters relating to divorce and maintenance, including triple talaq.
