New Delhi: The funeral of Hindu Munnani spokesman took a dangerous turn on Saturday when sporadic incidences of violence led to an overall tense situation in Coimbatore and neighbouring Tirupur.

Hindu Munnani's C Sasikumar, 36, was hacked to death by bike-borne assailants around 11pm near Thudiyalur on Thursday when the activist was returning home. The shocking death lead to outrage in the community following which, a nervous environment was scattered in the region.

Attending the funeral, the gathered mobs damaged window panes of several shops along the route from Coimbatore Medical College Hospital to Subramaniampalayam.

When the mob reached Thudiyalur, the place where Sasikumar lived, the enraged group turned on the police. Police jeeps were incinerated and stones were pelted the security officials.

Police suspect that Sasikumar might have been followed for days by the assailants who eventually planned the time and place of his murder.
