New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday awarded 25 years of imprisonment to the two convicted in Nitish Katara murder case. The court said the duo will spent 25 years in the jail.
Sukhdev Pehalwan, an aide of the Yadav cousins has also been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Nitish Katara, a resident of Delhi was murdered in 2002 by Vikas and his cousin Vishal because they didn’t approve Katara’s affair with their sister Bharti Yadav because of the caste difference.
The Delhi High court had awarded the duo 30 years in prison but the Supreme Court reduced the sentence to 25 years.
Nitish Katara’s mother Neelam Katara said she is happy with the Supreme Court’s decision.
“Happy with SC's decision, qualitatively. Honour crime will get stringent punishment, it’s not ordinary crime,” Neelam Katara said.
Nitish Katara was kidnapped and burnt to death in Ghaziabad in 2002. He was dating Bharti, the daughter of a politician.
