New Delhi: The Haji Ali Dargah trust on Monday approached the Supreme Court, challenging the Bombay High Court order which had allowed women’s entry into the sanctum of the Dargah in August.
The Bombay HC in its order had allowed women to ente the internal portion of the shrine but the trustees had challenged the HC’s verdict saying they will approach the Supreme Court.
The ban on women entering the shrine was imposed in 2012 by the Haji Ali Dargah Trust (HATD) citing some religious traditions as the reason. They defended the ban by arguments, most of which are sexist in nature and regressive.
The issue became news since April when the Bhumata Brigade President Trupti Desai and her band of women attempted to storm the premises but were prevented by police.
Later, a group of NGOs united under the banner of ‘Haji Ali For All’ to campaign for the cause.
