New Delhi: A Naxal was killed by the personnel of security forces in an encounter in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on Friday. Security personnel have recovered a .303 riffle from the slain rebel.

Reports of gunfights between the rebels and security forces in the state were frequent in the recent times.

In order to curb violence in Chhattisgarh, Chief Minister Raman Singh announced that the state government will form a Bastar battalion to increase employment and to strengthen the security forces against the threat from Maoists in the region. The candidates will be inducted from four districts - Sukma, Bijapur, Dantewada and Narayanpur for the battalion to be raised by CRPF.

Earlier on the day, six hardcore Maoists surrendered before security forces in the Naxal-affected region.

Days ago, police arrested six Maoists in a raid in Bijapur. As many as 25 Maoists, including six women surrendered before the police and the Forests Minister.
