New Delhi: A group of gunmen attacked the biggest Shia shrine in Afghan capital Kabul on Tuesday evening leaving five persons dead and more than 20 wounded. The attackers opened fire on worshippers gathered in the shrine on Muharram, a major Islamic holy day.
Reports said that one gunman was killed in the encounter with security forces. An unknown number of people are being held hostages inside the shrine.
According to police sources, the numbers of attackers dressed in police or military uniforms are believed to be three.
Security forces have evacuated the shrine where people gathered to commemorate the death of grandson of the prophet Mohammed.
