New Delhi: The Karnataka government has decided to enforce a new dress code for the high school girls. The existing uniform, which is skirts-and-shirts, will be replaced by salwar kameez or chudidar-kurta.

The change in the dress code has been taken with a view to building confidence among girl children and to protect their rights, primary and secondary education minister Tanveer Sait said.

“The change in the dress code has been taken with a view to building confidence among girl children and to protect their rights. In fact, there had been demands from parents of girl children to change school uniforms,” primary and secondary education minister Tanveer Sait said.

The new rule will be implemented from the coming academic year.

The move comes after cases of eve-teasing and abuses have been reported in the rural areas.

The decision by the state govt is going to impact 6.5 lakh girls, studying in government and government-aided schools.
