New Delhi: A Right to Information (RTI) activist was shot dead in Mumbai on Saturday by a gun-wielding man who entered the activist's house in Santa Cruz.

Bhupendra Vira, 72-years-old, who had vociferously campaigned against land mafia and encroachments in his Kalina colony, had recently lodged a police complaint against a local mafia.

Around 9 pm on Saturday, an unidentified man entered Vira's house in Santa Cruz and shot the activist at point plank range.

Anjali Damania, an activist and a former Aam Aadmi Party leader, said that the activist was targeted because of his opposition against illegal land mining.

Bhupendra Vira was part of the citizen's group 'Voice of Kalina'.  He had written several letters demanding action against the building of illegal structures.

Mr. Vira is survived by his three children, a daughter and two sons. According to the police, one of his sons had been stabbed almost four years ago.

Two people have been arrested by the Mumbai police in connection with the murder of Vira. The accused are Razzaq Khan, a former corporator with whom the activist had many confrontations, and his son Amjad.
